Short VIPERS Comprehensions

14/1/2019

I get asked on an almost daily basis to create VIPERS comprehensions for short text extracts as well as the novel guides found on www.literacyshedplus.com

I have been creating some of these and wanted feedback on their layout etc.

This example, Robin Hood and Little John, is aimed at reading ages 9-11.  I think that each text will be split into two sections.  The first section will focus on one of the VIPERS areas and the second section will have a number of different VIPERS questions.

Please take a look at the examples below (click an image to download the Word Version)

If you would like to request a topic/story etc or feedback then please leave it in the comments section.

These are fantastic for short burst of whole-class guided reading.

Personally, I think these are superb. We are finding it more and more difficult to find the time to share whole books with children. Using extracts - particularly from the classics - helps us to share more challenging reads. In turn, I find that children are surprised by how much they enjoy the extracts and thus want to read the books independently. Thank you for making this opportunity easier for teachers by setting the questions.

I think this is fantastic. Like Clare it is becoming harder and harder to find really well written texts with this standard of language and interest level.

Also the length is perfect.

I can think of so many ways to use this short burst text.

Please keep going. Thank you.

We have used Literacy Shed plus for a while now, and have just used Alma which was amazing! Just about to start on the Reading Vipers section for year 6.
Do you have anything on Rose Blanche please?

As others have said, this looks like just the right length and the range of questions is brilliant. Some poetry would be invaluable. Thanks.

These short reads are a fantastic idea. We use the larger Viper texts for guided reading but I feel the children still need extra input on answering questions. I would love to use these a couple times a week almost as morning work to help secure the children's understanding and also get them answering questions quicker. When will these be available?

This looks fantastic. Teachers are crying out for short extracts that are age appropriate with linked questions. Would love some of these for year 4 children

Love the vipers comprehensions - thank you! Wonder if some of the questions could be presented as a variety of SATs question styles so they’re getting used to different ways of answering too not just sentence answers. I know a lot of ours need practise at this!

Fantasy genre ones would be great - Spiderwick style.
I think these shorter resources will be very useful.
I like to keep my class novel mostly for pure pleasure.

We used the Robin Hood text last week in class (Yr 5-6 mixed) and the children thought it was superb, as I did.
It was really clear and supported our Vocabulary focus.
It's very difficult to find high quality texts that are appropriate for age ranges but this one was perfect.

Are there any more or is this one still being used as an opener to a possible trial?

Thanks!

Hi in September I'm going to be doing Ancient Egypt with my class. Do you have any suggestions on guided reading extracts I can do with my class.
